UBuntu on older machines ?

Can I recommend reading http://www.ubuntulinux.org/wiki/LowEndSystemSupport.

My Ubuntu install is on a 300 MHz, 128MB RAM, AMD machine and I find
that funning XFCE4 means that the system is very usable - including
OpenOffice.Org.

I recently upgrade XFCE to version 4.2, through the
http://www.os-cillation.com/article.php?sid=37 os-cillation
repositories.  For some reason I find 4.2 to be much snappier than the
version found in Ubuntu's Universe, though if you're tracking Hoary,
4.2 might already be in universe.  4.2 is also much nicer with icons
in the menu and a menu plugin for the panel.
