Hello folks,
I've recently installed Ubuntu Warty on an old Pentium-MMX (200MHz)
`noname` notebook. The distributions works fine and all basic hardware
is supported: PCMCIA, PCMCIA Wi-Fi card, etc.
I have just a problem with X (XFree 4.3) and the onboard Chips &
Technologies graphic card, model is F65554.
Each time is start the X server my system freezes completely and all I
can do is to power off (or reset) the machine.
It seems that Xfree 4.3 does not like the above described hardware,
anyway I found different links on the net[1][2] which success stories
regarding X running on similar platforms. Furthermore the XFree and
X.org documentation lists my graphic card as supported by the dedicated
chips driver.
In the past I had Debian 2.2 (Potato) running on the laptop which
shipped XFree 3.3 and it worked quite well. The problem in my case seems
to be the new XFree 4.x series.
My last hope to getting things working is to send out this email and
hope to get some useful feedback. I'm really interested in resurrecting
this old but nice piece of hardware.
Thanks for help and feedback.
Best regards,
I.
