No LDAP support in evolution?

Sure, but you probably need ldapsearch, or the libldap installed,
otherwise, I don't think ldap could work at all.

It turns out that it's a terminology problem for me.  The old 1.4.x
evolution had an icon in the tools->settings dialog for setting up ldap
sources.  

I thought that either the ubuntu version must have been compiled without
ldap support, or that I didn't have the correct ldap libraries on the
system.  Neither was the case.

Somewhere between 1.4 and the 2.0.2 version, ldap server were renamed to
be called address books.  I had to add an ldap addressbook via
File->new->addressbook, and once I did, the options for searching ldap
address books became available.
