Assistance needed: Unable to recover previous setup (non-data issue) GRUB+kernel +/ partition

  I can.  I re-installed to /dev/hda5 (my new "/").  However, this
  time I also re-installed "/boot" @ /dev/hda1.

  One would think this ought not be a problem, but I *still* can't
  change things by editing the /boot/grub/menu.lst options by
  setting root=/dev/hda5 => root=/dev/hda3

  Will do.  I'll re-do that and send you my "menu.lst"

  Yes, all data is intact.  I simply can't get get my old root back.
