Assistance needed: Unable to recover previous setup (non-data issue) GRUB+kernel +/ partition]

I just went through all this grub stuff today moving a distro to raid. 
Can you boot the recovery mode listing in grub?  Or the live CD?

Once you do, mount /dev/hda1 to /boot.

Give us the listing of the /boot directory and show us the contents of
/boot/grub/menu.lst

I think we can fix this without too much trouble if the partitions still
have the files on them.
