gdm / nis problem

I'm gradually trying to incorporate my Ubuntu (warty) workstation
in the workgroup network, which uses NIS (served from a
whiteboxlinux box).

Basically, I can't log on to the ubuntulinux workstation as
a nis user.  In /var/log/auth.log I find:

Dec 7 18:57:52 localhost gdm[7006]: (pam_unix) check pass; user unknown
Dec  7 18:57:52 localhost gdm[7006]: (pam_unix) authentication failure;
logname= uid=0 euid=0 tty=:0 ruser= rhost=

I'm reasonably sure that things are set up right, since
 ypcat passwd
works, as does
 getent passwd
and
 getent shadow
works only when invoked through sudo, as it should.

To add insult to insure, I can log on to the machine nicely through
ssh ... so sshd gets nis user right, but gdm doesn't. The PAM
config files look about the same ...

Help appreciated, thanks

Stefan

PS: In any case, a great distro!!!
