Ubuntu is not a good distribution for Multimedia

Well yes, obviously, Ubuntu aims at the desktop and server market, so it
offers and supports packages that people are likely to use ! ;o)
Maybe Ralf is right, you are more after a dedicated multimedia
workstation rather than a general purpose desktop/home box ?

I am not familiar with the command line program 'apt', but Ubuntu offers
a Graphical front-end for this, in order to manage packages easily.
I too was worried about the problem you describe, but no more ! :-)
It's very easy : instead of doing 'make install' type 'checkinstall'
instead ! This is a little program (install it from Synaptic) that will
make everything that's needed to incorporate your program properly into
the system. Then, if you start Synpatic, you will find your program
there, you can un-install it, re-install it etc, works like a
charm ! :o)
