I strongly suggest you use sudo to do administrative tasks.

However, if you REALLY must login as root, do this:

On my desktop, I use the top panel exclusively. I go to Computer >>
System Configuration >> Login Screen Setup.

You will be asked to enter your password. Do so.

You will be presented with The Login Screen Setup program. It has
several tabs along the top of it.

Select the Security tab. Click "Allow Root to login with GDM". Click Close.

Logout and try logging in as your root user. If it won't let you, then
try a ctrl-alt-delete to restart the xserver (and GDM). Try it again.

If it doesn't work then you probably have your root account setup wrong.

Best of luck!

David

P.S. Did I say "I strongly suggest you use sudo"? Reconsider. I meant it.
