Did you look at your /var/log/messages to see if udev spat out any
useful info?
try:
$tail /var/log/syslog
after you've plugged in your gizmo, and check for something resembling:
Dec 6 19:10:25 sybil udev[9760]: creating device node '/dev/GIZMO'
where '/dev/GIZMO' will be the device you're looking for.
