If lftp can't see them then I'm very tempted to blame a weird ftp server -
lftp is pretty reliable.
I can't speak for nautilus' ftp support because I only ever use it for
sftp, which is a completely different beast altogether.

POssibly a little harsh, but I can see where you're coming from.

If you could gather some information about the version of the ftp server
the machine runs and file a bugzilla report it will help identify the
problem, or at least provide some kind of indicator to anyone else who has
the problem that they are not alone.
