avoid syncronising clock and how to dial-up

My previous post mentioned manual editing of items in the rc?.d directories.

There is a tool for doing this sort of thing, update-rc.d in Debian and 
derivatives like Ubuntu.
The advantage is that it sets things up consistently across all the rc?.d 
directories from
one command.  Probably not appropriate for the tweak I was suggesting, but 
very much
worth learning and using for major maintenance.
