mandrake is not a joke imho. it works okay.

in your case, the only thing to add is: if you do not rely on kde or
gnome but want speed at all costs, skip kde and gnome (the distro you
use is more or less irrelevant) and use a lightweight de like e.g. 
xfce4, windowmaker, icewm or fluxbox. you can run k3b et all under them
but they will not tear down your available ram like gnome and kde do.
