How to build quickcam express module

I have a usb quickcam express, and I found the qc-usb-source and
qc-usb-utils packages in Universe. However, I can't build the
qc-usb-source because I have a strange mixture of kernel source and
kernel binaries. I have a P4, so I'd like to have the 686 kernel, but
I'm apparently running the 386 kernel, as reported by uname -r. I don't
understand the rules for the various kernel packages;
kernel-headers
kernel-image
kernel-package
kernel-source
kernel-tree
linux-{arch} (e.g. linux-686)
linux-headers
linux-image-{arch}
linux-source
I seem to have the sources for 2.6.8.1-3 and the kernel binary for
2.6.8.1-2. What packages SHOULD I install? I have built kernels from
source many times, but I don't understand the debian way yet (I'm a
recent convert from Fedora).
