Key bindings in Firefox; edit vs. sidebars!

Two follow-ups:

   1. One of the most useful (and I thought universal) Linux hotkeys is
      Ctrl+u for clearing a field.  In Ubuntu, however, it only seems to
      work in a few apps (easytag & *some* firefox fields).  Why not?
   2. I also have gotten used to using Shift+Ctrl+a to select a thread
      in Thunderbird & Mozilla Mail.  Why doesn't the hotkey combo work?
      (Ctrl+a does work for selecting all in a folder, though.)
      Conflict, maybe?
