indeed i meant lsmod, hehe
the list and order of the loaded modules are ok... it should simply work
as it does for many other people....
what model is you laptop ?
the behavior you see looks suspicoiusly like this bug:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=269268
first of all try to update to the linux-image (with synaptic or apt-get)
that really matches your arch (this might be one of -586 or -686)
if this doesnt help, there is a (experimental) 2.6.9 image availble:
