Sigh. Okidoki, I can deal with that fact, but not accept it. Is there
some system I can use to get around it? ESD? Jack?

If I set up all my applications to use ESD or Jack as their sound sink,
set up ESD or jack as the only programme able to open my sound card....

I have jackd, libjack and libesd0 all installed, but I am not sure where
I should look for examples on how to set them up with ALSA so I can have
a master volume.
