New install: No master volume...

i have a new laptop with a 0000:00:06.0 Multimedia audio controller: ALi 
Corporation M5451 PCI AC-Link Controller Audio Device (rev 02)


A default installation so am using alsa.

Applications can set their own volume independantly.

"A GNOME/GStreamer-based mixer application"  has two tabs:  "C-Media 
Electronics CMI9739 [OSS Mixer]" and "ALI 5451 [Alsa Mixer]".

The first has a PCM volume control that when it is at minimum there is 
no sound.  Any other setting it is on max.

The other tab has a PCM check box, that works in a similar manner.

The "Volume Control" applet has no effect at all but it's display 
reflects the setting of PCM on the first mixer tab.
