Authentication via Mac 10.6 LDAP

I have LDAP up and running on our 10.6 server, and would like to add ubuntu
clients. However my 11.10 VM does not allow me to login. I have followed
instructions on this page

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/OSXLDAPClientAuthentication

getent passwd

Does list the LDAP users, however I cannot login. Where can I check logs to
see what is going on?
