In addition, if you boot from an Ubuntu LiveCD or LiveUSB, you can use
System -> Administration -> Disk Utility, and this can show your hard
drive's SMART Data (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S.M.A.R.T.) if it supports
it, and do a fsck (Check filesystem) to diagnose any potential problems
there.
