Just so everyone is clear on the installation concept:

*Ubuntu live desktop CD's: *
ubiquity GUI installer clones the live filesystem to a hard drive partition.
So live CD can only run live or install, never upgrade in place.

*Ubuntu alternate CD's: *
debian text installer with a supply of package files. These can't run live,
but can be registered (apt-cdrom) as package archives for upgrades of
existing systems. They also support more complicated disk partition
scenarios during installation, e.g. RAID, LVM, encrypted partitions.
