<div>I first started playing with Ubuntu during 6.10. I consider myself a geek and wanted to try something new, I was getting sick of windows. I started with SuSe, then went to Mandrake, then Ubuntu and stopped there. I found it the easiest to use. With more options that I was looking for. I dual booted for a while until about 8.03 where I found out that I have absolutely no use for windows anymore. Between 8.03 and 9.03 i managed to convert both my wife's laptop and the kids PC strictly to Ubuntu. I was on digg and I see this article about WUBI. This would allow me to install ubuntu without messing with partioning (which at the time was scary to me). Of course I tried it but I didn't actually use it that much until 7.10 due to the fact that my wireless dongle (RT2571 based) caused the system to completly freeze up. That was my first exposure. On my personal side. Prior to becoming a computer science major I had taken an old computer (200 mhz) and went through installs for around 10 different distros. That was definitely one of the best learning exeriences. Especially when I went through the stage 1 oldschool bootstrap gentoo install. I highly recommend it for it you want to learn what every config file does. Ever. When I reached upperclass status is when I started messing around with linux to replace my desktop. As the coursework was becoming more time consuming, I found that it was much easier being able to ssh into my act at my convenience rather than work around lab schedules. (They allowed vnc which was nice but awkward at times). I started with debian since that's what the lab used, but after having problems with hardware compatibility I switched to ubuntu. My first version was breezy (circa 2005). Now that I'm out in the workforce, I'm pleased that my job is within a unix environment. I've also done dev work for pidgin and freeciv and some testing for ubuntu releases on the side. P.S. My license plate is 'KUBUNTU' so if you see me out on the road. Honk!
