How did you come to use Linux?

I tried Red Hat back in 1998 or 99. It was mostly just curiosity - I
didn't have any real reason or need for it. I remember calling Earthlink
tech support and talking them into giving me the IP addresses of the
DNS servers as DHCP was not working properly. That probably lasted a
week or two and I forgot about it. Tried Red Hat again in 2003, which
did not go well at all. Over the course of the next few years I got
more interested in open source and started using OS software where ever
I could on Windows. I got to the point that I was counseling friends and
anybody that would listen that the secret to a stable XP box was to
limit the MS software on it to just the OS. I came back to Linux with
Dapper, I think, in 2005. I dual booted my laptop and used Ubuntu more
often than not until I did something to hose my install. I was busy with
life so I didn't get around to fixing the install until 2007, when I
installed Feisty Fawn. I've been primarily a Linux user ever since. I do
maintain a XP partition, which I use only for the occasional video
editing project. Linux video editing just ain't there yet.
A couple of months ago my wife's XP desktop got wonky. It was an old 1
GHZ P3 machine. I bought a 2.4 GHZ P4 machine off of Craigslist for $50
and installed Jaunty on it. After the initial "things are different"
whining for a couple of days I haven't heard about it since. Stuff just
works. Then I took her old desktop and put Ubuntu sever on it, which I'm
using to backup everything else in the house.
