Everyone seems to have gone to Arch and OS X, sadly. I'm all for this,
but the Ubuntu love seems to have gone away for a lot of the members.
I think it depends on who you means as "everyone." I've been using
Ubuntu on my desktop for a long time. I haven't used it on my laptop,
though, because there is some serious stability problems with the Nvidia
drivers. (And both of my laptops happen to use Nvidia. When I bought
them, I didn't think it would be such a problem.) Most of the Linux
users I know are also using Ubuntu and I've set up members of my family
on it. I think it just matters on which community you affiliate most
closely with.
In regards to the original thread, I'd be interested in seeing increased
activity on the list, boards, website, etc. I'd also be up for
participating in a promotional project or two. Is there any specific
community need that we might fill? It seems like projects/teams do
better if they have something concrete and interesting to work on.
Something that's currently dear to my heart is how we can make use of
Ubuntu in the classroom (particularly in the training of future
programmers and computer workers). For the past six months, I've been
teaching tech classes at Stevens Henager's college. I'd really like to
do more with Linux, but putting together learning objectives, materials
and lessons is a TON of work.
I've put together some things, for example:
Installing Ubuntu Desktop
http://blog.oak-tree.us/index.php/2011/10/14/ubuntu-install
Installing Ubuntu Server
http://blog.oak-tree.us/index.php/2011/10/16/ubuntu-server
Linux and Active Directory: Part 1, Joining a Desktop to a Domain
http://blog.oak-tree.us/index.php/2011/10/23/linux-ad1
Linux and Active Directory: Part 2, Joining a Server to a Domain
http://blog.oak-tree.us/index.php/2011/10/23/linux-ad2
I've also got one video in the pipeline about using Ubuntu Server in an
Active Directory 2008 domain as a domain controller (joining an existing
domain, not creating a new one) via Samba and a second about using
GnuPGP for secure email. But after that, I'm not really sure where to go.
That's just one thought though. I know the group used to teach workshops
through the library to new computer users, would it be worthwhile to try
and resurrect that initiative? Would we want to put together materials
that other LOCOS could use as they try and promote Ubuntu?
Cheers,
Rob
