I agree with pretty much everything you've said Aaron and Canonical is
definitely targeting Ubuntu at your "average" user but I'd still say Ubuntu
is my choice distro for programming. It is easy for me to set up and use
without too much hassle and I found many I worked with at IBM felt the same
way compared to the official RHEL-based IBM distro.

Personally, I enjoy the buttons on the left and the general direction
Canonical is taking Gnome. They definitely are trying to compete directly
with Mac OS and thats OK by me so long as they experiment and try new things
like they're doing with the app indicators, Unity, and the discussions I've
seen about what to do with the now empty right side of the window.

The main thing I've noticed lately is that the past couple releases (9.10
and up) seem to be less stable for some users. I haven't had any problems
personally but I have had quite a few people I know run into troubles which
does concern me a bit.
