[ubuntu-us-ut] ext4 (was ext3 or XFS)

Ext4 isn't released as such. It is in the unstable branch of the
kernel, which means that they are trying to get it into the main kernel
line but it isn't ready yet. Plus the argument made by some is that it
is only there because it is authored by a kernel dev. I don't agree
with that argument, BTW.

Having read things on EXT4, I am excited for it, but I don't think it is
ready for inclusion as a default in a distro. I am not even sure if it
is ready for a distro period, but I haven't read much in the past 6
months on it.

As for extents, other file systems (reiser4, XFS, & JFS) all support
extents as well. There are not always default but it is one of the
reasons that those work well with large file systems.

My take on EXT4 is that it brings the stability of EXT to the new
filesystems. I am excited for it.

One note on backward compatibility. If you use Extents, your EXT4
partition can not be mounted as an Ext3 partition. So it is only
semi-backward compatible.
