I also like XFS for large file systems as it is more efficient with both
large and small files.  I also did a space-efficiency test on my
external 500G and XFS allowed me more space to actually *use* than ext3
did.

Now, I only briefly looked at the latter part of your email, but note
that RHEL does not *officially* support anything other than ext2/3 so if
you do need to worry about vendor support keep that in mind.

Again, my 2c toward XFS for large file storage vs ext3.. maybe ext4 (in
fedora9) will be better.
