I recrieved this at work and thought it would be interesting to some. This
was sent out from our IT department in reference to Windows Vista:
*The news:* Everybody has heard that Microsoft has released the new
Vistaoperating system.
*What it offers:* This release is supposed to offer improved user interface
and security features, but not much else.
*For home users:* For media and games, this could be a great release if you
have a system that is big enough and is compatible with Vista.
*For County users:* All new systems that agencies purchase will likely come
with Vista installed out-of-the-box. This new system will likely have many
bugs and flaws that will be found over the next few months and corrected by
Microsoft over the year.
*Items to note: *Vista will have trouble supporting many of the devices
that are attached to a current PC until manufacturers catch up.
Vista is a big unknown in terms of security problems
and issues integrating with a network as complex as the County's
It is unknown whether Vista will be capable of
running many of the custom applications deployed by the County.
*For 2007: Salt Lake County will not support Microsoft Vista systems on
the County network for the duration of 2007.*
* *Any new systems will have to have Microsoft XP installed
over Vista before being deployed. (The Vista license is still preserved for
later use.)
Should you have applications needing to run on Vista,
please coordinate with Information Services as 468-2417 to arrange testing
and certification of the application.
Should you have further questions, please call Information Services at
468-2417 for assistance.
Thank you,
Darren J. Franchow, CIO
