creating a CLI session

I have just installed Edgy Eft on my macbook. I love the Gnome
interface, but I want to be able to boot a command line interface only
session. This would be something like a server-only install of Ubuntu.
I've looked through the Ubuntu mailing lists and Google, and have not
found anything. The main reason I want to do this is because I spend
most of my time on the command line, and working in a CLI environment
would extend the power of my laptop battery.

I think the solution might be found in altering the grub options, but I
have no idea how and I don't want to break the whole system in the process.
