I would expect it to affect your download usage the same either way. You still have to get the audio and visual data down the pipes to be displayed on your monitors.
You may see a slightly lower usage if you ran an xserver on your server and vnc'd to it to watch a movie. That way you don't have to download the 50mb mpeg, you just download the screen data by tunnelling the xserver back through the ssh connection.
I hope you manage to find a decent solution.
