Ken,
Try booting into recovery mode while plugged into a wired network; going to
the shell prompt; and using apt-get update then apt-get dist-upgrade to get
(among other updates) a recent kernel update. My in-laws were recently
bitten by a kernel bug when they upgraded from 9.04 to 9.10. Their laptop
kept crashing. I don't know if the recent kernel update fixes the bug.
When my in-laws needed their laptop back, there was no kernel update out
yet, so I downgraded their laptop (backed up /home, reformatted, reinstalled
9.04, then restored /home).
Let us know how it goes.
