I thought I should update my last post to the mailing list & fill in
some details that I saw asked on irc
first, yes freenode was under attack, our channel was not affected.
also any system with a big enough bullseye will be shot at, that could
be a banks website, or a site with a lot of users (facebook & twitter
are fair examples) freenode is fairly huge, they are not yet the
biggest, but they're popularity & focus make up for that.
second, in the next 3 or 4 days the migration of the IRCD (the irc
server software) will be complete, the freenode staff included a fair
amount of options for dealing with issues, so my last message can be
ignored now, the attack has subsided for now & our response need not
be so brute to unregistered members if it were to happen again in the
future
third, irc has it's history of being an experimentation ground for
online attacks, I don't forsee a day where this history will go away.
irc has it's plagues at times. most of the time they are invisible to
the users or a minor bug. the freenode staff are great, whatever
issues they can't fix they will give great tips to help a chanop or
end user out. I felt the need for this one email since the fix they
recommended could have been the one time a major headache to our users
would have appeared. again you can disregard that notice now.
& Finally, if any drastic change were to happen that would affect a
fair percentage of our members (or has the potential to do so) I will
notify everyone on IRC & in the list here
Thanks for your patience & Enjoy the loco
