I fully agree with Lee.  Ubuntu images are not small, and it is easier
to get a full sized CD than to convince an older system, or one that
is being difficult, to boot via USB.

> Ah...  Well, those are not "average" CDs.  I highly recommend you spend a dollar and get a real one with 700 meg.  It is easier than making a bootable USB and then trying to convince a difficult system to boot from it.
