Gutsy is the development name, It isn't meant to confuse anyone. A lot of
projects put out codenames for their pre-release stuff. Ubuntu 7.10 refers
to the final release as it corresponds to the date. Maybe it is more visible
in ubuntu because the community for ubuntu is visible and involved. An easy
way to get rid of the confusion is just to ask as the original emailer did
and they will get an simple answer. There are also resources on ubuntu's
website stating what is what. It may confuse a new person to linux but a
simple explanation will help them understand. I also don't see anyone
complaining that about Microsoft Vista (NT 6.0), XP (NT 5.1), or OSX Tiger.

A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a
hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build
a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate,
act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a
computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly.
Specialization is for insects.
