Faster may not be an accurate advertisement. I've found windows xp to often be faster then ubuntu. But that's assuming you can keep your xp install clean. Most non-geeks can't do that.

I'm thinking of subverting the local geek storefront. I have some  
ideas for a poster for his window. He can charge users for the labor  
involved in backing up their crap and upgrading to Ubuntu, also for  
user training. As I'm not a big expert, he and I could do an old  
machine to see how it would work.
