[ubuntu-us-nm] Team status

Dear Kurt von Finck,

I apologize if I offended you. I was simply stating my opinion. Am I
free to express that, or are you now censoring my opinion? Correct me if
I am wrong, but no one is in charge of the Ubuntu group. There is not
one calling the shots, we all mutually cooperate and share our
opinions.

Now in context, mt said, "I joined the list because I need a little
mentoring. Just got back from visiting the NMGLUG meeting in Santa Fe.
I am located in Albuquerque. The team pages on wiki.ubuntu.com look
pretty much dead with no activity. Can someone contact me with a
current status on the team?"

Notice mt went to a face to face meeting in Santa Fe, which have
regularly scheduled meetings. But mt lives in Albuquerque and was
wondering about the "current status on the team." It is a fact that the
Ubuntu team does not have a regular face to face meeting. Yes, they
occasionally have special get togethers, like the release party. But
these are are twice a year. And there is also an occasional social get
together, but these are few and far between. The Endorphin Power Company
is a project not a meeting.

Now notice what I said, "the Ubuntu group is pretty much a once a week
chat - not much more." If you don't go to the Endorphin Power Company
and your looking for something more than online chat, what does the
Ubuntu team offer? About five meetings a year. So this "characterization
of the Ubuntu New Mexico group is" NOT "patently false." It would be
false if I said that the group has no meetings. Remember the context of
the question was the NMLUG.

Well there is a LUG meeting in Albuquerque with regular meetings, it is
the ABQLUG. It offers what the Ubuntu group doesn't, regular meetings.
It does not offer what the Ubuntu group does offer, online chat. I
specifically set it up so as to not compete but to complement. And you
can ask anyone who goes, I recommend that they join the Ubuntu group's
IRC. The Ubuntu Team is my team and I promote it whenever I can. I
believe in combining efforts and working together as a community. And
let me be clear, I do not "disparage our efforts."

Then you say, "this list is not a place for you to... recruit for your
own group." Are you the moderator of the list? Why does the Ubuntu Wiki
tell people to "check out these other Linux users' groups." Notice the
Albuquerque Linux Users Group is not listed. So is it just my group that
is censored? Read your chat logs, other groups have been mentioned and
there was no censor. I am not the one "Setting up an antagonistic
relationship between the Ubuntu New Mexico team and the ABQLUG."

If you would like I can talk to community council to mediate a
discussion if you feel there is a real conflict here, rather than simply
a misunderstanding. Building a community is tough and misunderstandings
are likely to happen. I fail to see where I was wrong for offering a
service that a person was apparently asking for. It would have been
different if I had said he needed to stop participating in the Ubuntu
group or something (something I would never do). If he lived in Santa Fe
I would have recommended the NMLUG up there. Would that have caused the
same response?

My apology is sincere for offending you. I appreciate all that the
members of the group do. I would never make light of that. Please try to
hear my heart in the words.

Stay free,
Jay Forrest
