Yes.  Think of it this way if you want to be able to burn and play DVD's
you don't just buy a DVD player you buy a DVDRW.  With server, and even
more so with non-free vmware workstation and ESX, there are vm settings
that you can adjust that you can not with player (i.e. adding additional
virtual drives, selecting virtual scsi or ide, number of processors,
etc.).  

Don't hate the player...hate the game.... =P
