[Ubuntu-US-NM] Got a request to help

I'm running with the wireless, Nvidia Linux 169, and sound now on my laptop. Did lots of reading on the forums.

Thanks for the support.

Vendor: Atheros Communications, Inc.
Device: AR5006EG 802.11 b/g Wireless PCI Express Adapter
Status: Status
Bus Type: PCI
Device Type: Unknown
Capabilities: Unknown

Here is the file with the info with the lspci command that I've attached. As far as the icon for NVidia in the upper right corner, I assume your talking about using 'Restricted Drivers'. I did not see an icon when I opened it.

In the 'Restricted Drivers', the Atheros Hardware Access Layer (HAL) is in use. When I try to enable the NVIDIA accelerated graphics drivers (latest cards), I receive the message 'The software source for the package nvidia-glx-new is not enabled'. I looked and found that this package is not on the 7.10 install for my laptop. Maybe it is on the Live Install CD somewhere, but I don't know where.

I figured that if I could get the wireless going, I'd have half the battle licked, and could proceed further with the web at my fingertips, and not having to move back and forth between systems moving CDs. Maybe I'm using the wrong method.

So what you're saying is that if we get Nvidia GeForce 7000M going, that could possibly solve my wireless woes?

Thanks for the help with it.

Mike

For the Nvidia you should see an icon in the upper right courner for restricted drivers. Open it and it will ask you if you want the nvidia drivers installed. For me that was also how I installed my wifi drivers.

I have the 32 bit 7.10 installed, however, I've been working on the wireless and Nvidia for 3 days now and haven't gotten anywhere with it. Seems I can't find the right driver for the wireless. Too many missing links for my understanding. At least I did get the application installed for installing the .ini file for the driver.

I'm stopping for a while or my wife will have my head. :)

 Thanks,

I'll do the 32 bit install and give it a try. I spent at least half the day trying to get the wireless going, but I didn't make too much progress. Spent a lot of time reading on various websites, and while playing with the ndiswrapper, I ended up messing something up and having to re-install.

I have the Atheros AR5BXB63. Sorry I'm asking for a lot of help, but if you guys can lead me along, I'd be really grateful to get my wireless going.

At least I feel I'm going to learn a lot.

Thanks,
Mike

I would like to suggest not running the 64 bit version. Move to the 32bit. The reason is that the 64bit is more of a special usage. Compiling, video editing, or running boinc services. Many "toy" applications will not be fully developed for the 64bit platform yet.

With the 32bit the Windows emulator and media tools have been tested more.

I got a request for some help for a person named Michael, his question is this

Hi,

Thanks in advance for the assistance. I currently have Vista on my laptop.

Aspire 5520-5912
AMD Turlon 64x2 Mobile Technology
NVIDIA GeForce 7000M
 Signal Up Wireless
160GB HD

I don't want Vista. I just don't like it. I really want to get away from Microsoft and go totally to Linux Ubuntu. I created the CD from the iso file and I checked the install CD and no errors. I'm trying to install the 64 bit version 7.10, but I'm getting the HAL Status 13 message. If anyone needs output like using 'dmesg', let me know how to get this for you for troubleshooting and I will.

Let me know if you need more info.

Thanks again for the assistance.

Any ideas oh Ubuntu gurus?
