Juan -
Welcome!

I have to agree with Don's assessment about ubuntu and laptops. I come from
a debian background, and made the switch to ubuntu on my servers with one of
the 5.x series. I made the jump on my laptop with 6.06 (I think it was) when
wireless with a wep key just worked. I haven't looked back since.

That's not to say that it doesn't have its quirks - my latest was getting
the vpn widget working. But it's my default o/s these days, and is getting
more play at work where it's providing critical (to our engineering dept, at
least) functionality.

I'm currently running 7.10 desktop on my laptop (new-to-me ibm t40) and a
homebrew amd x2 something-or-other. I'm also playing (for personal use and
for a client) with vmware and the newly-released Ubuntu JeOS - it's very
cool.

I've learned the most with my ubuntu installs by jumping in with a goal in
mind, and mucking about until it works. If this list can help you get what
you want out of ubuntu, I'm sure everyone's keen to help out. I know they
have when I've had questions...
