I tried Kubuntu as well. I have always ditched it in previous versions
because as you so eloquently put it, it seems more of an afterthought
than an equal partner (to see what it means for KDE and GNOME to get
equal development time and priority, check out OpenSuSE).

However, I thought they came closer in this version than ever. The only
reason I ended up staying with GNOME is because the kpilot code is
broken beyond repair. This, however, is not a Kubuntu problem -- I
discovered that I was unable to sync my Palm 700p in every KDE
distribution. Attempting to sync would result in kpilot segfaulting and
resetting my phone. Once, under SuSE, my phone locked in the middle of
the reset, and I had to do a hard reset to get it back (thank you,
backups!). But I think the Kubuntu devs worked overtime on Gutsy, and it
really shows. It isn't perfect by any means, but it is still a solid,
and now very workable, distribution.

I you are looking for a classic KDE experience, try out the Fedora KDE
spin. It is true-blue KDE, down to defaulting to koffice. The only way
you will recognize that it is Fedora is from the moonshine desktop
wallpaper. It is a total departure from RedHat's tradition, which is to
make the two desktops indistinguishable.
