In response to the writer and the answer as to what distro might be nice to try for someone just coming over from windows, I would agree that Linux Mint is the way to go now. I would have told you to try Ubuntu first a few months ago, but the changes to the desktop in Ubuntu with the release of Unity are profound. I myself have had a lot of trouble finding items in the newer desktop which I had previously easily found. I guess that the users agree with me for the most part as it seems that Mint is taking over the lead from Ubuntu as far as numbers of people downloading the ISO's. I have a friend who is trying to get used to using Ubuntu and when he updated he is now telling me he will stop trying to use it because it is changed so much. I am sure he is not alone. Even Microsoft learned that lesson when making Vista a marked change from the desktop layout which it earlier windows users had become accustomed to using. They lost a lot of users and a large part of the windows user base refused to budge from using XP. If it were my call, I would have made a special distro of Ubuntu for use on the netbooks and touch screens and left the old form of Ubuntu desktop intact for use on desktops etc. What a dumb move in my opinion to make such a vast change in how I access the same things i needed as before. I deal with a cat with health issues; it is a challenge with its rewards. For Linux/Ubuntu, you might consider getting an additional hard drive for the pc or dual booting it. I got a new hard drive for a laptop that had vista (!) installed. The vista/hard drive was removed and a new hard drive was installed with ubuntu and no windows. If i need to run windows again, the hard drives need to be switched. Ubuntu is one option.
