From fholson at cohousing.org Sun Sep 2 20:16:07 2018 From: fholson at cohousing.org (Fred H Olson) Date: Sun, 2 Sep 2018 15:16:07 -0500 (CDT) Subject: [ubuntu-us-mn] Open Agriculture Initiative Message-ID: Open Source is showing up in a all kinds of places beyond computer programs which of course are used in all realms. I just heard about one new to me... Open Agriculture Initiative MIT was featured on National Public Radio's program "Splendid Table" See: Global data collection and the future of indoor urban farming https://www.splendidtable.org/story/global-data-collection-and- the-future-of-indoor-urban-farming The urban farming movement takes many forms, both indoors and outdoors: school gardens, community vegetable patches, fish farms in tanks. Scientist Caleb Harper believes that indoor urban farming specifically can create the best tasting, most nutritious, and least energy intensive crops anywhere in the world. Harper is director of the Open Agriculture Initiative (OpenAg) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Media Lab. He and a global collection of “nerd farmers” are working on a Food Computer, which closely detects – and allows you to adjust – the growing conditions of any plant in the room. Fred -- Fred H.
