Sorry to hear about your cat.  I deal with a cat with health issues;
it is a challenge with its rewards.

For Linux/Ubuntu, you might consider getting an additional hard drive
for the pc or dual booting it.  I got a new hard drive for a laptop
that had vista (!) installed.  The vista/hard drive was removed and a
new hard drive was installed with ubuntu and no windows.  If i need to
run windows again, the hard drives need to be switched.

Ubuntu is one option.  There are other options of linux distributions
that may be more suited to the person who is moving off windows to
linux (perhaps mint).
