Thanks Brian but it does not look like that is the problem.
I dont think I am using Bindwood; I checked with Synaptic.
ls -al ~/.config/desktop-couch gives\:
-rw------- 1 fholson fholson 543 2010-11-17 11:20 desktop-couchdb.ini
