This is what worked for me,
http://www.ubuntugeek.com/how-to-install-java-runtime-environment-jre-in-ubuntu.html
Just run sudo apt-get install sun-java6-jre sun-java6-plugin sun-java6-fonts
Then you should have support for java in firefox.
If you get an error that the package was not found follow the following
steps. Go to System -> Administration -> Software Sources. Under Ubuntu
Software be sure that the option "Software Restricted by Copyright or Legal
Issues (multiverse)" is checked. Click close and try running the above code
again.
