It sounds like you are using a laptop and are running into the numlock bug
that has been reported. If you have to hold the shift key down to activate
the numlock function the keyboard interface software needs to be set up to
recognize that. Check to see if there is a keyboard map that is specific to
your hardware, and try using that. Alternatively if you are using a laptop
but don't see a keyboard map specific to your laptop, try some of the
generic keymaps and see if that helps.

To select a different keyboard map, go to System then Preferences, then
Keyboard. You should be presented with a 'Keyboard Preferences' dialog.
There are something like 5 tabs one of which includes 'Layouts' which you
should select. Now you will see a button next to 'Keyboard omdel:' Press
that, and select the manufacturer for your computer, or keyboard, and the
variety of keyboard that it offers next. The default is often 'Generic 105
key keyboard' or something like that.

Give the new keyboard layout a try for a couple of weeks and see if you
experience better results.
