Hey folks,
If you or someone you know is a student looking to get more exposure
with developing Open Source Software, the Google Summer of Code just
announced the mentoring projects [0] that will be participating. There
are many great projects out there so definitely check out the project
list. I'd like to highlight a few though as they have an Ubuntu Michigan
connection:
The first was a presentation that MUG had a while back from Patrick
McGarry about Ceph [1], the amazing distributed filesystem technology.
Check out their Ceph GSoC 2014 page [1] and get a feel for the project.
They have a list of ideas [2] that students can propose to work on, or
they can propose their own unique ideas.
The second project is one that's near and dear to my heart. Bookie [3],
the bookmarking application written by Rick Harding was accepted this
year as a mentoring organization [4]. There are several projects under
the Bookie umbrella [5] covering not only a web-based client-server
application but also a Chrome extension and Android client. If your
interests are in learning well-designed web application using Python and
Javascript this is a great opportunity.
(I also happen to be the backup mentor for Bookie so I'm getting a taste
of this first-hand. :))
There's plenty of projects looking for student proposals so please feel
free to pass along to any students you know who are looking to have a
summer writing code and getting paid for it. Applications and official
submissions start on March 10th, so the sooner you can get your
application sorted and submitted the better.
Patrick, Rick and I will be more than happy to answer questions and help
shepherd students through the process. Slots are limited so the sooner
things can be settled the better.
Let's make Google Summer of Code 2014 rock!
