problems after upgrading to Xubuntu 16.04

Bonnie I am not familiar with light locker or terminator.
My suggestion is to copy your common partition, /home and /etc configuration files to an external device and then install a clean version of xubuntu 16.04 and restore your files from the external device.
There are backup and restore programs like simple backup, deja-dup or tar compression you could also use.
