I read this article today about a San Francisco non-profit that
refurbish donated computers, put Ubuntu on it and then donate them to
schools and other organizations. What a wonderful way to spread the
benefits of Ubuntu and other FOSS.

*Untangle Organizes Open Source Installfest for Bay Area Schools*
SAN MATEO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE
<http://www.businesswire.com/>)--Untangle and the Alameda County
Computer Resource Center (ACCRC) have partnered to donate hundreds of
open source computers to Bay Area schools through an installfest on
March 1, 2008.
Untangle is organizing volunteers from the Bay Area Linux community to
install open source software (Ubuntu, Firefox, OpenOffice & more) on
recycled computers provided by the ACCRC in four locations: San
Francisco, Berkeley, San Mateo and Marin County. After being
refurbished, the computers will be donated to local schools with the
greatest need. Some of the schools participating include:
* Ascend School (Oakland)
* Bella Vista Elementary (Oakland)
* Lockwood School (Oakland)
* Whittier Elementary School (Oakland)
* Casa Grande High School (Petaluma)
* Woodside Elementary School (Concord)
* KIPP San Francisco Bay Academy (San Francisco)
* Mission High School (San Francisco)
Schools looking for computers should fill out the ACCRC's application here:

"Throwing away computers that could be used in schools is plain dumb,"
said James Burgett, founder and executive director of the ACCRC.
"Untangle has recognized this and decided to help fight the waste. For
this we can only applaud and hope that others learn from their example."
"132 million computers were bought in the year 2000 alone.^1 They're all
on the verge of being thrown out and none of them can run Windows
Vista," said Andrew Fife, Marketing Manager of Untangle. "But older
hardware works really well with Linux so recycling is a great way to
ensure that kids in all school districts have the same technology access
as those in the rich districts."
"The Installfest is a terrific way to share the benefits of the Internet
that many of us in the technology industry take for granted," said Paul
Kim, VP of Marketing, Mozilla. "Protecting the environment and providing
schools with quality free and open source software is an important
effort and we're very proud to be a part of it."
