Neat Article on Ubuntu 8.04 KDE on usability

While this article is interesting, it's not a complete picture. The truth is ubuntu is a far better experience out of the box than Windows. I just setup windows for a user last week and I was very annoyed with how dificult the update process was. There was also a lot of after install tweaking I had to do, which I just don't have to do with Ubuntu.

Matt,

You didn't include a link with your e-mail, but I assume you're referring to
this article.<http://contentconsumer.wordpress.com/2008/04/27/is-ubuntu-useable-enough-for-my-girlfriend/>I
found this in my Google Reader this morning from Slashdot. Note that
this
usability test did NOT use KDE but a standard GNOME installation on Hardy.

This article clearly explains one thing I hate about Linux culture: the
ridiculous idea that Linux is being held back on the desktop solely because
of Microsoft. The truth is that the software often doesn't deliver on users'
expectations, and many Linux fans decry anything remotely Windows-like
although Windows is what the world knows. Stupid annoyances like the ones in
that article need to be fixed at all costs. Usability is not a luxury, it's
a necessity.

As Linus Torvalds has said, we should not force users come to the
technology, but we should bring the technology to the users.
