Another thing to think about if you are seriously considering this is certification.
Most people I've met that are in the industry agree that certs are not a great representation of what a person *knows*.
Hell, I've heard people refer to MCSE as "Must Consult Someone Experienced". :)

But nothing will make a consumer feel better than to know that your people have had a standardized certification from an outside source.
http://www.ubuntu.com/news/ubuntucert is a good place to start I think.

I suspect many are doing what your talking about on the side. I've helped three small business' in the Boston area set up their own networks for email and websites and probably a dozen home networks. This is over a two *year* time span though. My personal feeling is the market drive to support a formal business is pretty low right now. Not saying impossible - just saying it may be a lot of work for naught.
The trick to running something like this is actually convincing people
to switching to Ubuntu. What you need to find is people who just want
to surf the web, who are sick of getting viruses. Check out this site,
they essentially do what you plan to: http://www.fixedbylinux.com/

will need VERY good advertising and marketing to start up.

considering how difficult it's been to advertise and create marketing
for this group. I'd say you are going to be faced with an uphill
struggle.
Although I don't mind a referral scheme, I could point people nearer to
you towards your business and likewise you point people in Southie/South
End towards me.
